Smoke was born in Los Santos, and grew up on the Grove Street cul-de-sac in Ganton next door to gang-leading Johnson brothers Sean "Sweet" Johnson, Brian Johnson and Carl "CJ" Johnson, who he was friends with, as well as friends Lance "Ryder" Wilson and Jeffrey "OG Loc" Cross. Similarly, the shot of Beverly's frame panning out with Smoke's baseball bat over it puts out a hint that he was involved in her death.Spoiler Warning: Plot and/or ending details are in the text which follows. Several conspiracy explanations suggest that Smoke was actually waiting for Carl's brother, Grove Street Families leader Sean "Sweet" Johnson, to arrive so he could hit him, just the way he and his real allies, the Ballas, were aiming at Sweet during The Introduction, but Carl's sudden arrival meant that he had to wait a little longer to maintain his secret plans to kill Sweet until his betrayal was exposed despite Sweet surviving. There is no monetary reward, but the mission Sweet & Kendl is automatically triggered. ( Smoke and Carl exit the house and walk out to Smoke's car, even as a shot zooms in to a close-up of Beverly's photo frame, with Smoke's baseball bat over it.)īig Smoke: You know me. But right now, we gotta take care our business. Like it says in the book, we are blessed and cursed.īig Smoke: Same things make us laugh, make us cry. ( Carl is sitting and looking at the picture he picked up, when Smoke suddenly enters the room, baseball bat in hand.)īig Smoke: You picked the wrong house, fool!ĬJ: ( picks up a chair in defense, backing off) Hey, hey! Big Smoke, it's me, Carl! Chill! Chill!īig Smoke: CJ? Oh, ( drops the bat) my dog! ( hugs Carl tight) Wassup? Ha ha ha ha! ( releases him) Hey baby, you okay, man?īig Smoke: Hey, I don't know why this had to happen, but I promise you, I'm going to find out who killed your moms. Voices in Carl's head: ( Kendl) Stop it! What are you doing? Carl, Brian, stop it! - ( Carl) Quit it! Moms will hear! - ( Kendl) Mom, they're up to something! ( Carl enters the Johnson house and picks up a picture lying on the floor.) Carl and Smoke talk about Beverly's death and that Carl wants revenge before leaving the house and driving to the cemetery at Market in Smoke's black Perennial, which he has just acquired. Carl reminds Smoke of who he is and the two share a tight hug.

Suddenly, big-bald-boned Melvin "Big Smoke" Harris, a long time friend of the Johnson family, enters the living room from the kitchen with a baseball bat assuming there is a burglar, and threatens to attack him. He takes a chair and sits down, remembering a time when his sister Kendl threatened to tell Beverly of Carl's antics with deceased younger brother Brian. Primary protagonist Carl "CJ" Johnson, after arriving in Grove Street on a bicycle, enters his childhood home and finds a picture of his recently deceased mother, Beverly.
